How soon after unprotected sex can I test for pregnancy

How soon after unprotected sex can I take a pregnancy test?

If you’ve recently had unprotected sex and are wondering when you can take a pregnancy test, you’re not alone. It’s one of the most common questions we’re asked—and the good news is, there are clear guidelines that can help.

Whether you’re actively trying to conceive or are concerned about an unplanned pregnancy, understanding when and how to test is key to getting an accurate result.

How soon can I take a pregnancy test?

The short answer is: you can take a pregnancy test from around 10 to 14 days after unprotected sex—but the exact timing depends on a few factors, including your cycle and the type of test you’re using.

The most accurate time to test for pregnancy

For the most accurate result, it’s best to wait until the day your period is due. Most pregnancy tests on the UK market are over 99% accurate from this point. This is usually about 14 days after ovulation or your most fertile window.

If your cycle is irregular or you’re not sure when you ovulated, count 21 days (3 weeks) from the day of unprotected sex for a reliable result.

Can I test earlier?

Yes, you can—particularly if you’re using an ultra early detection pregnancy test. These highly sensitive tests are designed to detect the pregnancy hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) before your period is due—sometimes up to 6 days early.

However, testing this early may give a false negative if your hCG levels haven’t risen enough to be detected yet. If you get a negative result but still suspect you might be pregnant, test again a few days later.

Types of pregnancy tests

There are two main types of pregnancy tests available:

Urine Tests (available over the counter or online):
These can be done at home, some offer ultra early detection, and they are most accurate when used with first morning urine, when hCG levels are most concentrated.

Blood Tests (done at a GP surgery or clinic):
These can detect pregnancy as early as 6–8 days after ovulation and are usually used for medical confirmation or monitoring.

Understanding hCG and implantation timing

After conception, the fertilised egg travels down the fallopian tube and implants in the uterus. This usually happens 6–10 days after ovulation. Once implantation occurs, the body begins to produce hCG, the hormone that pregnancy tests detect.

This is why it’s usually not possible to get an accurate result before implantation has occurred—even with sensitive tests.

What If my test Is negative?

If you test early and get a negative result, don’t panic. Your hCG levels might simply not be high enough yet. We recommend testing again in a few days or once your period is late.

If your period still doesn’t arrive and you continue to get negative results, it’s a good idea to speak to your GP.
